WordPress Tip One: Theme Selection

When using wordpress.org for your private website, there are lots of free themes that can be loaded via the wordpress administrative dashboard. Go to “Appearance” then “Themes” then “Install Themes”. You can do a search for a theme you like and that meets your needs. For example, if you type in “admire” you will see the theme that I am using for this website (ADMIRED). The creator of this theme has given you a host of options that can be used to ex. make a website with one column or three columns and has even given you a choice of colors. You might be suprised to know that there are  professionaly designed websites use basic themes and then have a web designer make changes to the theme. But, you can use a theme “as is” and not have to make any changes to the underlying code for the theme. Good luck.

Quinoa for Breakfast

I really like Quinoa!

Easy to make and tasty.

I have been having organic quinoa and organic oatmeal with soymilk, ground flaxseeds, and cinnamon for breakfast.

I also really like Chia Seeds.

Some key ideas that I have seen in a number of books on health, weight loss and nutrition:

(1) Eat calorie sparse foods but nutrient dense foods. When you eat a chocolate bar or even a nutrition bar, they have calories concentrated in “small packages.” You can eat this quite fast and still feel hungry and you have eaten lost of calories. Compare this with eating a salad with lots of vegetables. To get the same amount of calories, you would need to eat a lot more salad . The salad has lots of nutrients, but is calorie sparse. And the size of the salad will fill up your stomach and make you feel full. Additionally, it takes longer to eat the salad than a candy bar, so this also gives you body the chance to register the “I have eaten and I feel full” signal. See the Book: Eat To Live by Joel Fuhrman, MD.

(2) Eat slowly and more mindfully (pay attention/savor the foods) See the Book: Eating Mindfully: How to End Mindless Eating and Enjoy a Balanced Relationship with Food by Susan Albers

(3) Exercise

(4) Practice relaxation, meditation, guided imagery, Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong, Breathing Exercises, etc.

(5) Decrease consumption of animal products. Eat more plant foods. Look at books, such as Eat To Live, The China Study, Healthy at 100, etc.

(6) Don’t overeat. See for example, The Life-Transforming Diet By David J. Zulberg. Smaller dishes= smaller portions= better for you.

(7) Don’t buy the junk food that you binge on and can’t stop eating. I use this one.

Alicia Silverstone, actor and vegan, has written, The Kind Life.  The book discusses her views on being a vegan and the larger societal context of the way we treat animals,  and how our food choices impact the environment and our health.

As someone who is edging closer to being a vegetarian, I found the book to be great.  But, the the book  is useful for anyone looking to add more vegetarian/vegan meals to their diet, by showing simple steps to take to achieve this. And for those wishing to go vegan, the book will serve you well. Check-out the recipes and the suggestions for substitutions in recipes.

Additionally, the author discusses her views on being a vegan and the impact on our lives and the world. This is good because whether or not you share this point of view, we all need to make conscious decisions.  The book also  profiles health pioneers who espouse similar viewpoints and other’s living “the kind life,” such as a body builder who is a vegan.

For me, I found the book really helpful because it introduced me to a host of different foods that I knew little about, as well as recipes to incorporate these foods and foods that I currently eat.

So, whether you are looking to go vegan or just to add some more vegetarian meals to your diet, whether you agree or disagree with the views expressed in the book, or just want to make conscious decisions, the Kind Life is a realy good book to check-out.

WaterCress & Pea Shoots I recently started eating WaterCress. I bought a hydroponically grown one that still had its roots intact. It is great; it has a spicy flavor and I really like it. I bought it at Whole Foods. I think a hydroponically grown product can be a good alternative if you can’t find an organic product or the organic product is too expensive.

And I have been eating Pea Shoots. I like them, too. I get them from Trader Joe’s. Organic and Yummy.

A few other products that I have been eating are ground flaxseeds, organic pure cocoa, cinnamon, chia seeds, ginger, and been making some cool tea mixes.

I guess, “Go Green” has a dual meaning.

WordPress: WYSWYG to HTML: Finding My Place

When switching from the WYSWYG to the HTML code, is there a way that the place where the cursor was in WYSWYG, will  be automatically highlighted ( in yellow, etc.) on the html code? 

I am interested in a way that makes it easy to find the place where I was on the WYSWYG in the HTML code.

Anyone with suggestions, please let me know?

If not, then Dear WordPress: Can you add this to a near future wordpress update, please.

WordPress: Problems with Spacing (Separate Lines)

When using the WordPress WYSWYG environment, I have had problems with spacing, such as this:

What I want To Display:

Software and More.

But, after typing this in, I save the page only to see both lines of text on one line:

Software and More. Useful Products For Individuals and Small Businesses.

(The best solution would, I think, be  to insert a line break  “<br>” into the HTML Code, which I did when writing this post, but what if you aren’t so proficient with HTML  Happenings and just want to use the WYSWYG.)

My Solution:

I put a white colored period “.” into the line between the two lines of text. Make it “white” so it doesn’t appear when viewing the website. (This assumes you have a webpage that has a white background)

And Get This:

Useful Products For Individuals and Small Businesses.

(Just keep in mind: If you are cutting and pasting into the area where the white period is, the text will be white, so you must make it the color you want to be.)

Worpress Plugin: Get Sociable

I have been reading the book, Sams Teach Yourself WordPress in 10 Minutes.  I like this book; it is a good WordPress Learning Resource. It explains things well and is good for beginners, and more advanced Wordpresees. It mentions the “Sociable” Plugin which is available for WordPress.org users via the “Add New Plugins” menu link. I just added it my site, including blog posts. It is easy to set-up and makes it so you can put various social bookmarking tags onto your site. Check it out.

Nova: Hunting the Edge of Space: The Ever Expanding Universe

I watched Nova Tonight on PBS, entitled, “Hunting the Edge of Space: The Ever Expanding Universe.” www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/

It was Excellent. They discussed the history of the telescope and revolutionary discoveries in Astronomy. 

I was amazed when they said that there are 100 Billion Galaxies, each with 100 Billion Stars, more than all the grains of sand on all the beaches and deserts on Earth. And the Universe is continuing to expand.

It was fascinating to find out that 95% of the Universe is made up of either dark energy or dark matter, and we don’t really know what these are.  The analogy given for dark matter was for us to think about the 70% of the Earth that is water, and to imagine that we had no ideas what water is. For dark energy, they can tell it is there because it causes distortions of images from space, but  again, they don’t know what it is.

Additionally, they showed how a group of astronomers found remnants from the Big Bang by observing ,via a radio telescope, that areas of space were hotter than some other areas. They won the Nobel Price for this. Quite a good discovery.

And, of course, I really liked the images of the different galaxies, such as the butterfly galaxy.

As I watched the show, though, I thought about classic questions, such as what was before the big bang and how did it get there? And since the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?  (These are questions best answered via Religion.)

So, don’t forget to look up and check-out the stars or go and play with some strings…

Seinfeld Goes To Camp

I think it would be great for them to have a Seinfeld Movie.

But, here is my idea: You have them meeting, for the first time, at summer camp (sleep away) when they are kids. Even an animated version would be funny.

Could you imagine the characters as kids? And the mess hall booth that would be the pre-cursor to the diner. Yes, I know it doesn’t quite fit with the history of the characters from the series, but a little poetic license is useful, sometimes.) (Yes, I might be in it.) And of course, they would show the birth of the feud between Jerry and Newman. As for a twist, they could meet in a distant galaxy as kids at camp on the Star Trek Planet in a space ship far far away.
