Who Moved my Cheese? An Amzaing Way to Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life by Spencer Johnson, MD, is a great book. Its ideas and phrases have helped me numerous times. Basically there are four creatures, two are human-like and the other two are mouse-like. Cheese symbolizes the things we want and need in life. The four creatures are in a maze and in the room they are in, there is no longer any cheese; it has been eaten.
So, what to do next. The two mouse-like creatures carry their running sneakers over their shoulders and immediately go running into the maze to search for new cheese. The two human-like creatures stay their in the room thinking that new cheese will appear. The story goes on from there. The cheese is gone, a change has occurred, and the question is, how do they (and we) respond to change.
Sayings such as, “It is better to search in the maze then remain in a cheeseless situation,” are brought-forth throughout the story to crystalize our understanding of positive responses to change. The phrase above has helped me, when I have been wondering what to do when a situation in my life wasn’t going so well.
